Highlights

  • Toruń (Thorn) was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1230. It was not until over 200 years later that King Casimir IV established Polish crown’s overlordship over the area.
  • The most famous resident of Toruń until this day is Nicolaus Copernicus, the founder of the heliocentric theory published in the book entitled “De revolutionibus orbium coelestium” (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres). In 1945, a university was founded named after the prominent astronomer.
  • Gothic is the architectural style predominant among the historic buildings in Toruń and maintained in such buildings as the Old Town Hall, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, and the House of Nicolaus Copernicus, which currently holds a museum.
The symbol of Toruń is an angel. It has been present in the coat of arms of the city since the 15th century.
  • The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument has been standing on Toruń market for over 150 years.
The history of the Leaning Tower is associated with a legend about a Teutonic knight, who contrary to the law of the order fell in love with a merchant’s daughter. The couple was hiding in Toruń, with the hope that no one would discover their secret. Unfortunately, when the lovers were caught by the inhabitants, the City Council decided to impose a penalty on them. The girl was whipped, and the Teutonic knight was ordered to construct a tower. Its inclination reflects departure from the rules of the Teutonic Order.
  • Toruń is famous for gingerbread, whose history dates back 700 years ago. The ingredients that guarantee perfect taste include honey and a blend containing, among others, ginger and cinnamon. Today, visiting the Gingerbread Museum in Toruń, you can take part in baking of those fragrant delicacies.
  • A popular tourist attraction is Toruń is its planetarium, located in the city centre. Thanks to modern technology, you can go on a tour to various parts of the Universe and learn about the largest constellations.
  • Rapacki Square features the Cosmopolis Fountain. On summer evenings, water illuminations take place there, with the use of light and well-known pieces of music, such as the soundtrack to the Gladiator movie or the works of the famous Polish composer Michał Lorenc.
